Timmins declares Significant Weather Event for Dec. 28 amid blizzard forecast

The City of Timmins Public Works Department declared a Significant Weather Event effective 5 p.m. Sunday, December 28, 2025, under Ontario’s Minimum Maintenance Standards (Ontario Regulation 239/02), citing a forecast of 30 to 50 cm of snow, wind gusts of 60 to 70 km/h, and blizzard conditions with periods of near-zero visibility.

The declaration warns of hazardous travel and alerts residents to expected delays in winter maintenance. Roads and walkways are expected to be extremely difficult to navigate, and severe weather may affect local transit service while the event remains in effect.

Snow is expected to begin Sunday evening and continue through Monday night. Strong northwesterly winds will increase Monday morning and may produce blizzard conditions. Poor visibility and drifting snow are likely as gusts reach 60 to 70 km/h. Snow and winds are forecast to ease from west to east Monday night.

Environment Canada advises residents to consider postponing non‑essential travel until conditions improve.

Due to the anticipated snowfall, delays in snow plowing are expected on some city streets, roads, and most sidewalks. City resources will be deployed when conditions are deemed safe and appropriate.

Severe weather may impact Timmins Transit operations. Service delays or cancellations may occur. Updates will be posted on the City of Timmins website and social media channels.

The Winter Parking Ban remains in effect. Parking on city streets is prohibited daily between 11:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. from November 1 to April 30, unless otherwise posted. City By‑law 1993‑4162 prohibits placing snow from private property onto city roads or sidewalks.

A follow‑up notice will announce the end of the Significant Weather Event once conditions permit.
