Timmins Library Adds Plaque and Photo Album to Birch Bark Canoe Display
The Timmins Public Library has installed a new information plaque and photo album for the birch bark canoe on display. The installation was attended by Métis Nation of Ontario Timmins President Pierre Lefebvre, Library CEO Carole-Ann Demers, and Assistant Director Amy Knifton.
The birch bark canoe was built in 2005 by instructor Tom Byers and three members of the Métis Nation of Ontario: Len Rondeau, Paul Rondeau, and Richard Aubin. It has been on display at the library since 2006 as part of an awareness campaign to promote Métis culture and revive traditional craft.
Library visitors can now view a step-by-step photo album detailing the canoe's creation process. The display is located in the library's seating area.
