Timmins mayor to visit Rouyn-Noranda after Feb. 4 delegation trip, city says
Timmins Mayor Michelle Boileau will travel to Rouyn-Noranda, Que., to meet with the city’s economic partners and representatives from the education sector, following a Feb. 4 visit to Timmins by Rouyn-Noranda Mayor Gilles Chapadeau and a delegation, the City of Timmins said.
In a statement posted on the city’s website, Timmins said the two municipalities are discussing closer cooperation in areas that include mining and critical minerals, tourism, education, culture and shared social issues.
The city said Chapadeau came to Timmins on Feb. 4 with representatives from three Rouyn-Noranda economic development groups: the Rouyn-Noranda Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Local Development Centre and the Community Futures Development Corporation.
According to the city, the delegation attended Timmins’ State of the City address and met with municipal elected officials, members of the business community and community partners. The city said the meetings included discussions about shared priorities and future prospects.
Chapadeau, in a quoted statement included in the city’s post, said he believes “many opportunities can be developed at various levels, both economically and in terms of tourism,” by building lasting ties between the communities. He also noted Rouyn-Noranda is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
Boileau, also quoted in the statement, said the municipalities have “complementary strengths,” pointing to mining, critical minerals and skilled workforce development. She said the alliance is intended to foster cooperation and support innovation and development.
The city did not provide a date for Boileau’s trip to Rouyn-Noranda.
