Timmins names Lorraine Cantin as latest Heart of Gold Award recipient
The City of Timmins named science educator Lorraine Cantin the latest recipient of its Heart of Gold Award on Oct. 14, citing her contributions to science education and efforts to build interest in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
The Heart of Gold Recognition Program is a municipal initiative that highlights local achievement during regular council meetings. The program accepts public nominations in four categories: Volunteer and Community Service; Youth Community and Civic Engagement; Achievement in Sports; and Achievement in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics).
Cantin has promoted science education for more than five decades, working with students, educators and families through local activities and events.
She has organized science fairs and school projects for local students.
Cantin remains involved with Science Timmins and helped establish the Science Village.
In 1998, she co-chaired the Canada-wide School Science Fair (CWSF), which drew more than 1,000 participants.
Residents may nominate individuals they know for the Heart of Gold Recognition Program in any of the four categories. The city provides a nomination form and eligibility criteria on its website.
