Timmins Police Begin 2024 Festive RIDE Program

The Timmins Police Service has initiated the 2024 Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign. This effort will run through New Year's Day and involves conducting roadside spot checks across Timmins to identify and deter impaired driving. This campaign is part of a larger provincial initiative aimed at reducing the risks associated with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Chief Syd Lecky stated that the primary goal is to ensure safe travel for everyone during the holiday season. He emphasized that impaired driving is preventable and encouraged residents to plan ahead and make safe choices.

Key points highlighted by the Timmins Police include:

  • Impaired driving remains a leading cause of road collisions, injuries, and fatalities in Canada.

  • Legal consequences for impaired driving include fines, license suspensions, and criminal charges.

  • Residents are encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.

The police recommend several measures to avoid impaired driving:

  • Arrange for a designated driver.

  • Use a taxi, rideshare, or public transit.

  • Stay overnight if no safe transportation options are available.

The Festive RIDE program aims to enforce laws and educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving, promoting responsible decision-making.
