Timmins reports 5,298.738 m³ bypassed in raw overflow at Mattagami treatment plant on Aug. 23, 2026

A raw overflow at Timmins’ Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant on Aug. 23, 2026 resulted in a “volume by-passed” of 5,298.738 m³ of municipal wastewater, according to a notice from the City of Timmins Environmental Services Department. The plant is at 551 Airport Road.

The city’s notice also asked residents to conserve water during rainstorms, listing examples such as delaying or limiting laundry, long showers, or running the dishwasher, and to avoid flushing wipes.

The city said the overflow ran from 12:18 p.m. to 8:07 p.m. on Aug. 23, 2026.

The notice did not provide a specific cause for the Aug. 23, 2026 overflow.

In general information included with the notice, the city said bypasses or overflows can occur when a treatment plant or a treatment process is overwhelmed, and that these events are often caused by heavy rainfall and/or snowmelt.

The notice said partially treated wastewater may be diverted away from a treatment process to prevent backups, overflows, or damage to the system.

The city also included the message “no wipes in the pipes” as part of its request to keep pipes clear.
