Timmins reports secondary bypass at Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant starting Sept. 1, 2026

A secondary bypass began at the Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant in Timmins at 7:51 a.m. on Sept. 1, 2026, according to a report posted by the City of Timmins’ Environmental Services Department.

In the report, the city listed the end date, end time and the volume by-passed as “on-going,” meaning those details were not yet available at the time of posting.

The city listed the plant’s address as 551 Airport Road.

Municipal wastewater consists of 99% water from stormwater and homes and businesses, including water from washing and flushing, the city said.

The city said bypasses or overflows can occur when a treatment plant or a treatment process is overwhelmed, often during heavy rainfall and/or snowmelt. During a bypass or overflow, the city said partially treated wastewater is diverted away from a treatment process to prevent backups, overflows or damage to the system.

The city advised residents to conserve water during rainstorms by delaying or limiting unnecessary use such as laundry, taking long showers or running the dishwasher. The city also urged residents not to flush wipes, using the phrase “no wipes in the pipes.”
