Timmins reports secondary bypass at Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant

The City of Timmins says a secondary bypass began at the Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant at 12:15 p.m. on April 23, 2026.

The city’s Environmental Services Department says bypasses can happen when a wastewater treatment plant or one of its treatment processes is overwhelmed, often during heavy rainfall or snowmelt.

In its notice, the city said that during a bypass, partially treated wastewater is diverted around part of the treatment process to prevent backups, overflows or damage to the system.

The city listed the plant’s address as 551 Airport Road. It said the end date, end time and volume bypassed were “TBD” (to be determined).

The city urged residents to conserve water during rainstorms by delaying laundry, long showers and dishwasher use.

The city also asked residents not to flush wipes, saying “no wipes in the pipes.”
