Timmins to Transition Recycling Responsibilities in 2025
Starting January 1, 2025, the City of Timmins will no longer handle household residential recycling collection. This change is due to provincial legislation from 2023, which mandates that companies producing blue box materials must fully fund and operate Ontario's recycling system.
In Timmins, the non-profit organization Circular Materials will oversee residential recycling through an agreement with GFL Environmental Inc. The collection schedule will remain unchanged. GFL has acquired the city's recycling bins for $172,108. Existing programs for small electronics, batteries, and tires will continue.
Ken Krcel, Director of Public Works and Environmental Services, stated that the main change for residents will be identifying the correct contact for recycling inquiries. This information will be updated on the city's website and waste management app. The shift in responsibility aims to increase accountability and extend landfill life cycles. By 2026, the province plans to expand the list of recyclable materials to be consistent across Ontario.
Residents are encouraged to recycle correctly to avoid contamination, ensuring proper collection and processing. Guidelines for acceptable recycling practices are available on the Timmins website.
