Timmins Transit to Launch Electronic Fare Collection System
Timmins Transit will introduce a new electronic fare collection system, "Pay YOUR Way," starting January 6, 2025. This system will enable passengers to pay for transit services using smartphones or reloadable fare cards. New electronic fare boxes will be installed on all buses and vans to support this change.
In addition to the fare boxes, kiosks and point-of-sale systems will be available at the main Transit Terminal on Spruce St. These facilities will allow passengers to obtain and reload their fare cards. Despite the introduction of these new payment methods, passengers will still have the option to pay with exact change.
The implementation of this system is funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and provincial gas tax funding. Ken Krcel, Director of Public Works and Environmental Services, confirmed that there will be no increase in bus fare rates for the year 2025.
The new system is designed to enhance data collection and improve the efficiency of transit operations. It provides an alternative to traditional cash payments, aligning with broader trends in public transportation systems across the country.
Riders in Timmins and the surrounding Northeast Ontario region can expect these changes, which are intended to streamline the payment process and offer greater flexibility in how they pay for transit services.
