Two Arrested in Timmins Cheque Fraud Investigation

Timmins Police Service has charged two local residents in connection with a cheque fraud investigation in the downtown area. Police reported that on August 21, 2025, two individuals approached a person outside a bank on Pine Street South and asked for help cashing a cheque in exchange for a small sum of money. The individual agreed, but was later notified by the bank that the cheque was fraudulent.

Timmins Police said further investigation revealed additional victims targeted in similar incidents. On August 28, 2025, police located one suspect outside another bank on Pine Street South and made an arrest. The second suspect was arrested the same day as he exited a different bank while in possession of a cheque that was not issued to him.

According to police, Tammy Young, 40, and Jeffrey McGee, 44, both of Timmins, have each been charged with four counts of fraud under $5,000 and four counts of possession of property obtained by crime. Both have been released on undertakings and are scheduled to appear in court on October 21, 2025.

The Timmins Police Service reminded the public to be cautious of fraud attempts, stating that criminals may try to take advantage of trust and goodwill. The police advised against cashing cheques for others or providing banking assistance to unknown individuals and encouraged anyone who has experienced similar activity to contact them at 705-264-1201.
