Two people killed and two injured in separate Timmins shootings July 31 and Aug. 1, police say

Two people were killed and two others were injured in two separate shootings in Timmins early July 31 and Aug. 1, Timmins Police Service said in a media release.

Police said the two investigations are not linked. Police also said there is “no immediate threat to the public at large,” but not all individuals involved have been arrested.

In the July 31 case, police said officers responded shortly after 1 a.m. to reports of gunshots in the area of Balsam Street North near Fifth Avenue. A male victim was taken to hospital and was pronounced dead.

Police said investigators determined the victim was shot by an individual known to him. Officers secured the area and processed two residences and outside areas for evidence, police said. The suspect has not been arrested, police said.

In the Aug. 1 case, police said officers responded shortly after midnight to reports of gunshots in the area of Rea Street South and Wilson Avenue. Officers found three people with gunshot wounds.

Police said one victim was pronounced dead. A second victim remained in hospital in serious condition with life-threatening injuries. A third person was treated for a gunshot wound and released from hospital.

Police said the shootings were not random acts of violence, but “isolated conflict between people known to one another.” Police said both cases involved illegal firearms.

Police said the shootings had an element linked to what it described as the “drug culture,” and that officers have seized some firearms.

Police said two people have been arrested, but did not release further details.

Police said resources assigned to the investigations include the Timmins Police Service Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Section, and Emergency Response Team, with support from the Ontario Provincial Police Forensic Identification Section and Tactics and Rescue Unit. Police said officers will remain in the areas while the investigations continue.
