Two youths taken to hospital after e-bike collision at Timmins intersection, police say

Two female youths were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after an e-bike collided with a motor vehicle at the intersection of Algonquin Boulevard and Preston Street in Timmins on Oct. 14, 2026, according to the Timmins Police Service.

Police said the crash prompted a public reminder about Ontario rules for e-bikes and e-scooters, aimed at riders and at parents or guardians of young riders.

The Timmins Police Service said its investigation found the youths failed to stop for a red light before the collision.

Under Ontario regulations cited by police, riders must be at least 16 years old to operate an e-bike or e-scooter. Riders must also wear an approved bicycle helmet or motorcycle helmet, as applicable.

Police said e-bike riders are required to follow traffic laws, including stopping at stop signs and obeying traffic signals.

“E-bikes offer a convenient way to get around, but they are not without risks. Riders must recognize that they share the road with larger vehicles and that failing to obey traffic signs or signals can have serious consequences. A moment of inattention or a failure to stop can result in injuries that could otherwise be prevented,” Inspector Chalmers of the Timmins Police Service said.

Police said riders should operate responsibly, stay aware of their surroundings, and use caution around motor vehicles, pedestrians and other road users.

Police also said parents and guardians should ensure children understand the rules and safety requirements before using an e-bike or e-scooter. Riders should not assume other road users will see them or be able to stop in time to avoid a collision, police said.
