WAHA to Address Federal Funding Shortfall for New Health Campus
The Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) will hold a press conference to address the lack of federal funding in the Government of Canada's 2024-2025 Budget for WAHA's new health campus. The event is scheduled for Monday, May 27, 2024, at 11:45 a.m. EST at the Assembly of First Nations in Ottawa.
In 2007, the federal government signed the Weeneebayko Area Health Integration Framework Agreement, committing to fund 45 percent of the capital costs for the new health campus. The campus is intended to include a hostel, staff housing, an Elder Care Centre, and a new hospital in Moosonee, as well as an acute care centre on Moose Factory Island. The new facilities are needed to replace the 75-year-old Weeneebayko General Hospital, which is Canada's oldest un-renovated hospital.
Speakers available for interviews after the press conference include National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, WAHA President and CEO Lynne Innes, Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare, Grand Chief Leo Friday of the Mushkegowuk Council, and N.D.P. M.P. Charlie Angus.
