Weeneebayko Area Health Authority Outlines Medical Transportation Benefits

The Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) has released information regarding the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Medical Transportation program. This program provides funding for registered First Nations and recognized Inuit persons to access medically required health services at the nearest appropriate facility. The transportation method used must be the most economical and efficient, considering the urgency and the client's condition.

Non-medical escorts are covered under specific conditions, such as if the client is under 19, has a physical or mental disability, or requires assistance with daily living activities due to their medical condition. Requests for escorts must be completed by a referring physician, nurse practitioner, nurse in charge, patient coordinator, or registered nurse.

Certain services are not provided as benefits and are not appealable. These include compassionate travel, child care purposes, and travel for clients in federal or provincial institutions. Additionally, benefits may include assistance with meals and accommodation for overnight or extended stays, with the most economical options chosen. All other expenses, such as telephone and tips, are the client's responsibility.
