CFIA Recalls Pumpkin Seeds in Toronto Due to Potential Salmonella Contamination
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recalled several pumpkin seed products sold in Toronto because of possible Salmonella contamination. The affected items include Orasta Organic Pumpkin Seeds, Organic European Pumpkin Seeds (unbranded), and Fine Goods Wholesome Raw European Pumpkin Seeds Organic. These products were available at Fiesta Farm, Beaches Natural Foods, and The Sweet Potato at various times between March and May 2025.
According to the CFIA, some people who eat food contaminated with Salmonella can develop serious infections, particularly young children, pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. The agency reports that no illnesses linked to these pumpkin seeds have been reported as of the recall date.
The CFIA states that food contaminated with Salmonella may not show any obvious signs, such as spoilage in appearance or smell, but can still cause illness. The agency notes that healthy individuals can experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
The specific products recalled are:
- Orasta Organic Pumpkin Seeds, 250 g, with UPC 7 28795 59321 6, sold from April 17, 2025, to May 10, 2025, at Fiesta Farm, 200 Christie St., Toronto.
- Organic European Pumpkin Seeds (no UPC, various sizes), sold from March 2025 to May 8, 2025, at Beaches Natural Foods, 1947 Queen St E, Toronto.
- Fine Goods Wholesome Raw European Pumpkin Seeds Organic (various sizes, UPCs starting with 0205069), sold from April 24, 2025, to May 6, 2025, at The Sweet Potato, 108 Vine Ave Unit B, Toronto.
The recall was issued after a similar recall in another country, CFIA reports. The agency is conducting an investigation that could result in further recalls. CFIA is also checking that recalled products are removed from sale by the affected businesses.
CFIA advises that recalled products should not be consumed, used, sold, served, or distributed. The agency states these products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.
