CFIA recalls several pistachio products over Salmonella risk; Ontario listing includes St. Thomas

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a food recall warning on September 24, 2025, for several pistachio products sold in Alberta and Ontario due to possible Salmonella contamination. The agency said the recall is linked to an ongoing investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. Ontario sales identified in the notice include raw pistachios sold at a store in St. Thomas.

According to the CFIA, food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. The agency says young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness. Reported symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea; long‑term complications may include severe arthritis.

The CFIA advises consumers to check for the recalled products and not to consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute them. The CFIA says recalled items should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase. Anyone who thinks they became sick after consuming a recalled product should contact a healthcare provider, the agency said.

In Ontario, the recall covers Briwood Farm Market Raw Pistachios, about 0.3 lb, with barcodes starting with 0 200827. The CFIA says they were sold from July 15 through September 23, 2025, at Briwood Farm Market, 1030 Talbot Street, St. Thomas.

In Alberta, the CFIA listed several items. Unbranded “Pistachios W/Out Skin” in 200 g (UPC 0200069011997), 400 g (UPC 0200700023990), and 800 g (UPC 0200220046998), with all packed‑on dates up to and including 21.09.25, were sold at Sanjha Punjab and Mega Sanjha Punjab Grocery Stores at six locations in Calgary. O.K. brand “G. Pista” (Item #6006, 100 g; Item #6005, 200 g) was sold June 20 to September 22, 2025, at O.K. General Food Store in Calgary. “Unsalted Raw Pistachios” 455 g (no UPC) were sold July 10 to September 22, 2025, at Omonia Foods Import in Edmonton. “Raw Pistachio's” 200 g (UPC 0 200868 908993) were sold June 18 to September 23, 2025, at Scarpone’s Italian Store in Calgary. Great West Italian Importers Ltd. sold variable‑weight “Pistachio kernels” to restaurants in Alberta from June 18 to September 23, 2025.

The CFIA classified the alert as a Class 2 food recall warning with identification number RA‑78119. The agency said its food safety investigation may lead to additional recalls and that it is verifying the removal of recalled products from the marketplace. The Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating the outbreak of human illness associated with this recall, the CFIA said.
