Contract Awarded for Northlander Rail Service Restoration
The Ontario government has awarded a contract to initiate the reconstruction of platforms and installation of pre-manufactured shelters at train stops along the Northlander corridor. This development is part of the plan to reinstate passenger rail service between Timmins and Toronto. The construction will include stops in North Bay, Temagami, Temiskaming Shores, Englehart, Kirkland Lake, Matheson, and Cochrane. A separate contract will be issued for the Timmins-Porcupine station.
The awarded contract involves the installation of raised concrete platforms with enhanced accessibility, lighting, and signage. Pre-manufactured shelters will be installed at specific stops including Matheson, Kirkland Lake, Temiskaming Shores, and Temagami.
The new Northlander trains will feature accessibility improvements such as wheelchair lifts, mobility aid storage, and fully accessible washrooms. The trains will also offer Wi-Fi and galley-style food services. Once operational, the Northlander will provide service from Timmins to Toronto, with frequency adjusted based on seasonal demand, ranging from four to seven days a week.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance transportation infrastructure in Northern Ontario, aiming to improve connectivity and support economic growth in the region.
