Ontario Allocates $34.9 Million for Water Infrastructure in Sudbury
The Ontario government has announced an allocation of up to $34.9 million for water infrastructure projects in Greater Sudbury. This funding is part of the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, aimed at supporting the construction of 3,300 new homes in the area. The City of Greater Sudbury plans to use the funds to upgrade the Lively-Walden Wastewater System, which includes improvements to lift stations and water collection systems, as well as the expansion of the Walden Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the provincial government to invest in municipal water infrastructure, which is seen as essential for enabling new housing developments. The government has increased its total investment in the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund to $1.2 billion, with a second round of applications open until November 1, 2024.
This funding is intended to address the growing demand for housing in Sudbury and support economic growth by improving essential infrastructure. The government has reserved $120 million of the additional $250 million for projects in small, rural, and northern municipalities without specific housing targets.
