Ontario Expands Alcohol Sales to Grocery and Big-Box Stores
As of October 31, 2024, all licensed grocery and big-box stores in Ontario are now permitted to sell alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, cider, and ready-to-drink options. This change is part of a phased expansion initiated by the Ontario government earlier in the year.
The expansion allows approximately 850 grocery stores, including big-box retailers, to sell these beverages in various pack sizes. This move follows a similar expansion in September, which enabled 4,700 convenience stores across the province to sell alcoholic beverages.
The Ontario government states that this initiative aims to provide more choice and convenience for consumers while supporting local businesses and producers. The government also launched an interactive map to help consumers locate retailers and producers across Ontario, including over 1,000 local breweries, wineries, and distilleries.
The government has also implemented measures to ensure the responsible sale and consumption of alcohol. This includes maintaining collaboration with the LCBO, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, and The Beer Store, along with consultations with industry partners and stakeholders.
Additionally, the government has permanently allowed the transfer of wine and spirits between locations owned by the same entity or affiliated licensees to assist bars and restaurants with inventory management. Licensed stores can now display alcoholic beverages in multiple areas within their premises, subject to certain limitations.
