Rea Brand Soppressata Salami Sweet Recalled Due to Salmonella in Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec

A batch of Rea brand Soppressata Salami Sweet is being recalled from stores in Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec due to possible contamination with Salmonella, according to a notice from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued on July 14.

The recall affects the Rea brand Soppressata Salami Sweet with the UPC code 8 41571 04220 0 and code 5050 224, produced by Marini Foods Limited. The CFIA advises consumers not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled salami product.

Salmonella contamination can cause illness even if affected food does not look or smell spoiled. According to the CFIA, young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk from Salmonella infections, which can sometimes be severe or even fatal. Symptoms in otherwise healthy people can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Severe complications could include long-term conditions like arthritis.

The recall was initiated after the CFIA identified the risk during a foodborne illness outbreak investigation. The agency is currently overseeing the removal of the recalled products from the market and notes that the investigation may result in further recalls if necessary. The recall warning is directed at the general public, as well as hotels, restaurants, institutions, and retailers in the affected provinces.

Consumers are advised by the CFIA to dispose of the recalled product or return it to the store where it was purchased. Individuals who believe they have become ill after consuming the product are encouraged to contact a healthcare provider.
