Secondary Bypass at Timmins Water Pollution Control Plant Reported
The City of Timmins has reported a secondary bypass event at the Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant on April 29, 2025. According to the city's notice, heavy rainfall led to high flows at the facility, resulting in the discharge of partially treated wastewater into the Mattagami River.
The city reported that the bypass occurred between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and involved approximately 7,300 cubic metres of partially treated effluent. The City of Timmins stated that the event was reported to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks as required by provincial regulations.
The city also reported that no public beaches were open for swimming in the area at the time of the incident and that there are no known drinking water intakes downstream of the discharge point. According to the city, all regulatory notification and reporting requirements were fulfilled. The incident remains under review by provincial authorities.
