Timmins Fire Department Highlights Fire Prevention Week 2024
The Timmins Fire Department is participating in Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 6 to 12, 2024. This event is organized by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and focuses on educating the public about fire safety. The theme for this year is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!"
The NFPA states that working smoke alarms can reduce the risk of death in a home fire by more than half. However, three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms.
The Timmins Fire Department has provided several tips for smoke alarm safety:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.
- Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
- Ensure smoke alarms are suitable for all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
Throughout the week, the Timmins Fire Department will be present at various locations in the city to discuss fire safety and the importance of functional smoke alarms. For more information, residents can visit the Timmins Fire Department's website or fpw.org.
