Timmins police assisting investigation into James Street garage fire deemed suspicious

Timmins police are assisting in an investigation after Timmins Fire Department investigators determined the circumstances around an early-morning detached garage fire on James Street were suspicious, the City of Timmins said.

The fire, which spread to a nearby fence and trees, was brought under control within about 20 minutes after crews were dispatched. The city’s update did not include details about what led investigators to classify the circumstances as suspicious.

According to the city, crews from Timmins Fire Department Stations 3 and 5 were dispatched at 6:54 a.m. to a detached garage fire on James Street that had spread to a nearby fence and trees.

Firefighters extinguished the flames and prevented further spread and damage to adjacent property, the city said. The fire was under control by 7:12 a.m.

The city said Timmins Fire Department investigators attended the scene to determine a cause. After an initial investigation, investigators determined the circumstances were suspicious and contacted Timmins Police Service to assist.

The city did not provide further information about the investigation or a potential cause.

In its statement, the Timmins Fire Department reminded residents to check that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working and to have a home escape plan.
