Timmins police investigate homicide after shots fired reported near Balsam Street North

Timmins police are investigating a homicide after responding to a shots-fired call shortly after midnight on July 31 in the area of Balsam Street North, the Timmins Police Service said. Officers found an adult male with significant injuries. He was taken to hospital in vital signs absent condition and later pronounced dead.

Police have not identified the victim. The service said a suspect has not yet been located.

According to the Timmins Police Service, officers secured the scene, seized one firearm and provided emergency first aid until paramedics arrived.

The Timmins Police Service Criminal Investigations Division has assumed carriage of the investigation. Police said preliminary information indicates the victim and suspect were known to one another and that the incident was targeted.

Police said Ontario Provincial Police resources, including the OPP Canine Unit, Emergency Response Team and Tactics and Rescue Unit, assisted Timmins officers in clearing a residence in the Cedar Street North area in an effort to locate the suspect.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and additional information will be released when it can be shared without compromising the investigation.
