Timmins Police Respond to Bear Attack in Lozanne Crescent Area
Timmins Police Service responded to a bear attack in the Lozanne Crescent area at around 4:08 a.m. on Thursday. According to police, a resident let their dog outside and saw a bear cub in a nearby tree. While trying to retrieve the dog, the resident was attacked by the mother bear. A family member who attempted to help was also injured. Both people sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and the dog was not harmed.
The occurrence has been forwarded to the Ministry of Natural Resources for further investigation. Timmins Police Service reported that officers searched for the bears in the area but were unable to locate them.
Police advise residents never to approach bear cubs, noting that the mother is likely nearby and may act defensively. The police also advise against intervening in bear encounters and recommend securing garbage and outdoor food sources to avoid attracting bears.
According to Timmins Police Service, emergency situations that require a call to 911 include bears entering residences or schoolyards during school hours, behaving aggressively or threateningly, killing pets or livestock and remaining in the area, or approaching public gatherings. In these circumstances, Timmins Police Service will respond and may seek assistance from the Ministry of Natural Resources.
For non-emergency bear sightings—such as a bear roaming yards, climbing trees, or accessing garbage—police ask residents to call the provincial Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 rather than contacting the police directly.
