Timmins Police Warns of Scam Impersonating Officers

The Timmins Police Service has issued a warning to residents in the Northeast of Ontario about a scam involving individuals posing as police officers. These fraudsters are contacting people, falsely claiming to represent the Timmins Police Service or court services, and are requesting bail money for a family member or loved one.

According to the Timmins Police Service, they will never contact individuals to request money for bail or any other financial purposes. These calls are fraudulent, and the public is urged to remain vigilant and protect their personal and financial information.

Fraudsters often use pressure tactics to create a sense of urgency, insisting that immediate payment is necessary to avoid further consequences. They may even offer to visit the victim's residence to collect the cash payment.

Residents are advised to:

  • Hang up immediately if they receive such a call and do not provide any personal or financial information.

  • Verify the legitimacy of any call by contacting the Timmins Police Service directly using their official number.

  • Avoid sending money, as legitimate police services do not request bail money, gift cards, or wire transfers over the phone.

  • Report any suspicious activity to the Timmins Police Service.

The Timmins Police Service reminds the community that scammers often exploit fear and urgency to deceive victims. It is important to take the time to verify any claims before taking action.
