Arctic Marine Response Station in Rankin Inlet Ends Season

The Canadian Coast Guard's Arctic Marine Response Station (AMRS) in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, concluded its operational season on October 22, 2024. The station, which opened on June 21, 2024, provided search and rescue services throughout the boating season in the areas of Rankin Inlet, Chesterfield Inlet, and Whale Cove.

During the operational period, the station conducted four training exercises and responded to eight search and rescue incidents, covering over 737 nautical miles. Training included cultural education, first response to oil spills, and land-based survival exercises, aimed at enhancing the understanding of the region and strengthening community relationships.

The AMRS, initially established in 2018 as the Inshore Rescue Boat North station, is the first Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue station in the Arctic. It is staffed by Indigenous personnel trained by the Canadian Coast Guard. The station is part of Canada's Oceans Protection Plan, which seeks to improve marine safety in Arctic waters in collaboration with Indigenous communities.

Marine emergencies in western Hudson Bay can be reported to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton, available 24/7 at 1-800-267-7270 or via VHF radio on channel 16.
