CFIA recalls Kehar Californian Pistachio Kernel sold in Alberta and B.C. over possible Salmonella

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) posted a food recall warning on Aug. 6, 2026, for Kehar brand Californian Pistachio Kernel because of possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled product was distributed in Alberta and British Columbia, the agency said.

For residents who may have bought this product while travelling or through out-of-province retailers, Salmonella-contaminated food may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness, according to the CFIA. The agency says young children, pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immune systems can develop serious and sometimes deadly infections.

The recalled products are:

• Kehar Californian Pistachio Kernel (200 g) — UPC 8 20103 22666 0; codes: Best Before: Dec. 2027; Production: Jan. 2025; Lot # Jan 2025
• Kehar Californian Pistachio Kernel (170 g) — UPC 6 62834 79173 0; codes: Best Before: Dec. 2027; Production: Jan. 2025; Lot # Jan 2025

The CFIA’s recall notice says consumers should not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute the recalled products. The agency says recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the place where they were purchased.

Symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, according to the CFIA. The agency also notes that long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

The recall was triggered by CFIA test results. The CFIA said there have been no reported illnesses associated with consumption of the recalled products.

The CFIA says it is conducting a food safety investigation that could lead to the recall of other products. The agency also says it is verifying that recalled products are being removed from the marketplace.

The recall is classified as Class 2 and has identification number RA-82447. Kehar Foods International Ltd. is the recalling firm, according to the CFIA notice.
