Ontario Offers Free Flu and COVID-19 Vaccines Province-Wide

The Ontario government has announced that free flu shots and new COVID-19 vaccines are now available across the province. These vaccines can be accessed at local pharmacies, public health units, and primary care providers. The flu shot is available to all residents aged six months and older. The updated COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for those who have not received a dose or had a confirmed COVID-19 infection in the past six months.

Starting November 4, the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) immunization, Beyfortus®, will be available for infants and high-risk children up to 24 months. This expanded program aims to provide free access to over 200,000 families through public health units and healthcare providers. Pregnant women can also receive a single dose of Abrysvo® to protect their infants from birth to six months.

The province has also expanded its RSV prevention program for older adults, making doses available for those aged 60 and older in long-term care homes, Elder Care Lodges, and retirement homes. Ontario is noted as the first in Canada to have a publicly funded older adult RSV program.

Health officials encourage residents to consult with healthcare professionals to determine their vaccination schedules and emphasize the importance of staying updated on vaccinations to reduce hospital visits during the respiratory illness season.
