Town of Cochrane proclaims annual Blue Heart Cultural Awareness Week, June 21–July 1

The Town of Cochrane has proclaimed an annual “Blue Heart Cultural Awareness Week,” to be observed each year from June 21 to July 1, according to a proclamation dated June 19, 2026.

For residents, the proclamation signals the town’s intention to hold activities during that period and identifies where they would be centred and which organizations the town plans to work with.

The proclamation designates Lake Commando and the Commando Pavilion as the main locations connected to the observance. It says Lake Commando—“historically known as the ‘Little Lake Camping Grounds’”—has “served for centuries as the central meeting point” and describes it as the community’s “Blue Heart.”

It also assigns the Commando Pavilion as the hub for activities during the week.

The proclamation says the town will work with Taykwa Tagamou Nation, the Ininew Friendship Centre, ACFO Temiskaming-Cochrane, and Le Rayon Franco de Cochrane to develop programming for the week.

In outlining the purpose of that programming, the proclamation states it is intended to educate residents about local history, to highlight artistic, linguistic and spiritual contributions tied to what it describes as the town’s “three foundational pillars”—“Indigenous sovereignty, Francophone culture, and Anglophone industrial pioneering”—and to encourage youth to view the community’s “tricultural identity” positively.

The proclamation is dated June 19, 2026, and is signed by Mayor Peter Politis.
