Organic Pumpkin Seeds Recalled in Guelph and Aylmer Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

Organic pumpkin seeds sold at The Stone Store in Guelph and The Hope Eco-Farm Store in Aylmer are being recalled in Ontario due to possible Salmonella contamination, according to a warning from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on May 10, 2025.

Pumpkin seeds distributed at The Stone Store between March 30 and May 7, 2025, and at The Hope Eco-Farm Store between March 21 and May 9, 2025, are affected by this recall, as stated by the CFIA. Individuals at higher risk for severe illness from Salmonella include young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, according to the agency.

The bulk Organic European Raw Pumpkin Seeds (product of Austria, sold with no UPC) were available at The Stone Store located at 14 Commercial Street in Guelph. The Hope Eco-Farm Store Pumpkin Seeds Organic (1 lb, no UPC) were sold at 51681 College Line in Aylmer. The CFIA reports that this recall was triggered by a similar action in another country. No illnesses linked to these products have been reported in Canada as of the announcement date.

The CFIA warns that Salmonella infection may cause fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea among healthy individuals. The agency notes that long-term complications can include severe arthritis. Consumption of Salmonella-contaminated food may not be detected through appearance or smell.

The CFIA advises consumers and retailers not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled products. They should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase. Customers uncertain about whether they have the recalled seeds should contact their retailer, according to the agency.

The CFIA is investigating the situation and monitoring removal of recalled products from the marketplace. Further recalls may occur as the investigation continues.
