Timmins plans chlorine contact tank cleaning at Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant through Sept. 21

The City of Timmins plans to drain, clean and refill the chlorine contact tank at the Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant starting at 8 a.m. on Aug. 17, with the work expected to continue until on or before Sept. 21.

The maintenance affects part of the plant’s disinfection process. The city says chlorine will still be added to the final effluent during the work, even though the maintenance will temporarily reduce chlorine contact time.

The work will take place at the Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant at 551 Airport Road.

The city says the cleaning is intended to remove solids from the bottom of the tank and algae and moss growth from the tank walls.

The city says it does not expect the maintenance to significantly affect final disinfection.

The city says it has notified the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, and that samples will be collected.

The end time for the maintenance, as well as the volume to be by-passed, were listed as “TBD” in the city’s notice.

The city will post the final date and time on the next business day after the work is completed.
