Timmins reports ongoing raw wastewater overflow at Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant

The City of Timmins reported a raw wastewater overflow at the Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant, 551 Airport Road, that started at 8:12 a.m. on Sept. 1, 2026, and was listed as ongoing in a city report posted that day.

The notice matters for nearby residents because the city asked people to reduce water use while the overflow is underway.

In the Sept. 1 overflow report, the city listed the end date and end time as “on-going.” The “Volume by-passed” field was also listed as “on-going.”

The city did not provide a cause for the overflow in the report.

The city said residents can help by conserving water, such as by delaying laundry or limiting other water use during rainstorms.

The notice also asked residents not to put wipes in the sewer system.

The city’s report included general information about overflows, saying municipal wastewater is about 99% water and that overflows can occur when a treatment plant or process is overwhelmed, often during heavy rainfall or snowmelt.
