CFIA recalls Hafez “Sugerless” halva sold in Ontario and B.C. over possible Salmonella
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recalled Hafez brand “Sugerless” Halva with Date Syrup (400 g) sold in Ontario and British Columbia because of possible Salmonella contamination, according to a federal recall warning last updated May 5, 2026.
For shoppers, the key issue is whether this specific product is in your home. Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness, the CFIA said.
The CFIA said the recalled product is labeled Hafez brand “Sugerless” Halva with Date Syrup in a 400 g package. The agency listed the UPC as 8 15872 00501 1, with codes “BB 12_26” and “35/11420.”
The CFIA advised consumers not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled product. The agency said recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.
The recall was triggered by CFIA test results. As of May 5, 2026, the CFIA said there had been no reported illnesses linked to the product.
The CFIA said young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may be more likely to develop serious and sometimes deadly Salmonella infections. The CFIA said healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. The CFIA said long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
Hafez International Trading Inc. is the recalling firm, the CFIA said.
The CFIA said it is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of other products. The agency also said it is verifying that recalled products are being removed from the marketplace.
