Guidelines for Safe Navigation of Spring Melt in Northeast Ontario
Ice Safety and Flood Awareness as Spring Melt Begins in Northeast Ontario
As the spring melt commences in Northeast Ontario, including the areas around Smooth Rock Falls, residents are urged to adhere to safety guidelines to mitigate risks associated with ice and potential flooding.
Ice thickness is key during this season, as the stability of ice rapidly changes with warming temperatures. Residents should verify ice thickness in several locations. Activities like walking or cross-country skiing require at least 4 inches of clear, hard ice. Snowmobiles or ATVs need 5 inches, cars or small pickups require 8 to 12 inches, and medium trucks necessitate a minimum of 12 to 15 inches, according to safety standards commonly referenced by experts.
For personal safety, it is advised to wear thermal protective buoyant suits or lifejackets over winter clothing. These provide added buoyancy in emergencies. Additionally, carrying a safety kit is recommended, including tools such as a lighter, waterproof matches, fire starter, pocketknife, compass, whistle, ice picks, ice staff, rope, and a mobile phone.
The increased risk of flooding due to melting snow and ice means that preparedness is crucial. Residents should stay informed through local advisories and be ready for potential emergencies as changing conditions can occur quickly.
These safety measures are designed to aid residents in safely navigating the spring melt while minimizing risk from both ice instability and potential floods.
