Ontario Northland Issues Rail Safety Guidelines for Winter Recreation
Ontario Northland has issued a set of safety guidelines for snowmobilers and other winter recreational vehicle users regarding railway crossings. The guidelines emphasize the importance of using designated railway crossings, maintaining a safe distance from tracks, and exercising extra caution during nighttime and winter conditions.
Key points from the guidelines include:
- Use Designated Railway Crossings: Always cross at designated points to avoid life-threatening situations.
- Stop, Look, and Listen for Trains: Slow down, look both ways, and listen for oncoming trains at crossings. Only proceed when it is safe.
- Keep Your Distance: Maintain a safe distance from tracks as helmets, engine noise, and wind can hinder the ability to hear approaching trains. Snow dust from passing trains can also reduce visibility.
- Leave Your Vehicle If It Stalls or Gets Stuck: In case of a breakdown on tracks, vacate the vehicle immediately and move at least 30 meters away. Contact the railway company or call 911 if necessary.
- Extra Caution at Night and in Winter: Reduced visibility during these times makes it harder to detect trains or crossings.
- Model the Right Behavior: Experienced riders should demonstrate responsible behavior as younger or less experienced riders often learn by observing others.
