Smooth Rock Falls posts election-season notice on limits to council decision-making

Smooth Rock Falls has posted an election-season notice reminding residents that municipal council decisions are limited by law, funding and required procedures, ahead of the town’s municipal election on Oct. 26, 2026.

The town’s message is aimed at setting expectations around campaign promises and new ideas, stating that council “can’t just do whatever it wants” and must work within a set framework when considering municipal projects.

In the notice, the town lists five factors council must consider before making decisions.

First, it says municipalities can act only within authority granted by the province through legislation, including the Municipal Act, 2001.

Second, the notice says every new project, service or initiative has a cost, and council must consider affordability and long-term financial sustainability.

Third, it says the municipality must respect existing commitments, including agreements, contracts and legal obligations.

Fourth, the town says council must consider community-wide impact, including “the needs of the municipality as a whole, not just individual requests or interests.”

Fifth, the notice says decisions must follow municipal policies and procedures, and must be made through resolutions or by-laws at duly constituted meetings.

The notice also includes a general reminder that “a good idea is not automatically a financially responsible, legally permissible or achievable municipal project.”

Municipal election day in Smooth Rock Falls is Oct. 26, 2026, according to the notice.
