Smooth Rock Falls Proclaims January 2025 as Alzheimer Awareness Month
The Town of Smooth Rock Falls has declared January 2025 as National Alzheimer Awareness Month. This initiative is part of a broader effort to increase awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, conditions that affect many Canadians. The proclamation highlights that Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disorder that primarily impacts individuals over 65, though it can also affect younger adults.
According to the proclamation, over 733,040 Canadians are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease. Projections suggest that nearly one million Canadians will be living with dementia by 2031. The Alzheimer Society Cochrane-Temiskaming is recognized for its role in providing programs and services to residents in the region, aiming to reduce the stigma associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Mayor Patrick Roberts issued the proclamation, urging residents, businesses, and services in Smooth Rock Falls to support the development of a Dementia Friendly Community. This initiative encourages individuals living with dementia to remain active and engaged in community life.
The town's efforts to promote a Dementia Friendly Community are part of a larger commitment to support those living with dementia and their families, ensuring they can participate confidently in community activities.
