Smooth Rock Falls says snow storage sites are full; Public Works shifts focus to flood prevention

Smooth Rock Falls’ snow storage sites are full after a heavier-than-normal winter, limiting how much additional snow can be moved as some roads remain rough, some sidewalks have not yet been cleared, and road widening is still needed in several areas, the town said in a Public Works update posted April 15.

The town’s notice sets expectations for residents as spring temperatures fluctuate: with limited space to relocate snow, Public Works is shifting attention to flood prevention work that can affect drainage and road conditions.

In its April 15 update, the Town of Smooth Rock Falls said the volume of snow this winter exceeded normal conditions and that all designated snow storage areas are now at capacity. The town said there is “very little room left to move additional snow.”

The town said some roads remain rough and some sidewalks have not yet been cleared. It also said road widening is still required in several areas.

Public Works efforts are now focused on flood prevention, including clearing storm drains and ensuring proper drainage, the town said.

The town said its Public Works department is a small team and cannot address all issues at once. Work is being prioritized, with flood prevention and public safety listed as the top priorities.

The notice also included a reminder about conduct toward municipal staff and contractors. The town said “vulgar language, aggressive behaviour, or disrespectful conduct” toward Public Works employees or contractors “will not be tolerated.”
