Canada Allocates Funds for Nuclear Energy Developments Across Provinces
On March 5, 2025, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced several investments targeting the development of nuclear energy projects in Canada. These investments encompass financial allocations to various projects located in Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
In Mississauga, Ontario, AtkinsRéalis will receive a $304 million loan to aid in developing a standard design for the next generation of CANDU reactor technology. Meanwhile, Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington New Nuclear Project has been allocated $55 million from the Future Electricity Fund for ongoing development initiatives in Darlington, Ontario.
Additional funding includes $3.5 million granted to Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in Chalk River, Ontario, intended for the creation of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) guidelines. In Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, $2.8 million has been designated for site readiness and supply chain evaluations as part of an SMR site assessment. Furthermore, the Alberta Electric System Operator in Calgary will benefit from an $18.5 million investment to support energy market adjustments.
Minister Wilkinson made these announcements, highlighting the strategic disbursements from government funds, including the Future Electricity Fund and NRCan’s Enabling Small Modular Reactors Program.
