Canada Expels Six Indian Diplomats Amid Investigation
On October 14, 2024, Global Affairs Canada announced the expulsion of six Indian diplomats and consular officials from Canada. This action is linked to an investigation into alleged criminal activities targeting Canadian citizens, reportedly involving agents connected to the Government of India.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been investigating these activities and requested India to waive diplomatic and consular immunities to facilitate interviews with relevant individuals. However, India did not agree to this request, prompting Canada to issue expulsion notices. Following these notices, India decided to withdraw its officials.
This development occurs against the backdrop of over 75 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and India, which include significant historical, business, and cultural ties. The Canadian government emphasizes that the decision was made to ensure the safety and security of Canadians and to uphold the rule of law. Ongoing dialogue with India is maintained through Canada's High Commission in Delhi.
The investigation is part of a broader inquiry into the killing of Canadian citizen and Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed in British Columbia on June 18, 2023. In May 2024, the RCMP announced the arrests of four individuals allegedly involved in Nijjar's killing.
