Canada Sets 25% Tariffs on U.S. Imports in Trade Measure
On March 4, 2025, the Government of Canada announced the implementation of a 25% tariff on certain imports from the United States. This measure, stated by the Department of Finance Canada, is in response to the tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canadian goods. The initial phase of these tariffs will target goods valued at $30 billion, with a potential escalation affecting up to $155 billion if U.S. tariffs remain unchanged.
The announcement was made by Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs. It underscores Canada's strategic response amidst ongoing trade tensions between the two countries.
These tariffs are effective immediately on specified goods imported from the United States, as per the current government directive.
