CFIA recalls Auricchio Gorgonzola Piccante sold in Ontario and Quebec over possible Listeria
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a food recall warning on April 17 for Auricchio brand Gorgonzola D.O.P. Piccante (200 g) sold in Ontario and Quebec because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The warning matters for people who may have the cheese at home, particularly older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a weakened immune system, who the CFIA says face a higher risk of serious illness from Listeria.
The CFIA listed the recalled product as Auricchio Gorgonzola D.O.P. Piccante in a 200-gram package with UPC 8 004603 100787. The affected lot codes are L 2595276A1 and L 2595219A1, both marked “Best Before: 08/05/2026.”
According to the CFIA, consumers should not eat the recalled cheese, and retailers and food service operators should not sell or serve it. The agency said the product should be thrown out or returned to where it was purchased.
The CFIA said Listeria contamination may not be obvious because food can look and smell normal. The agency said symptoms can include nausea, vomiting and persistent fever, and can also involve muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. In pregnant people, the CFIA said illness can be mild but can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or stillbirth. The agency said severe cases can be fatal.
The CFIA said the recall was triggered by its inspection activities and that there have been no reported illnesses linked to the product.
The agency said it is conducting a food safety investigation that could lead to the recall of other products, and that it is checking that recalled products are being removed from the marketplace.
The recall is classified as Class 1 and is listed under identification number RA-81906. The recalling firm is Les Ventes JVS, according to the CFIA.
