CFIA recalls three Micro Verdure microgreens in Quebec over possible E. coli contamination

Micro-Verdure Inc. is recalling three Micro Verdure brand microgreen products distributed in Quebec because of possible contamination with pathogenic E. coli, according to a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) food recall warning last updated May 20.

The CFIA says food contaminated with pathogenic E. coli may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. The agency has classified the notice as a Class 1 recall.

The CFIA says people should not consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled products. The agency says the recalled items should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.

The CFIA listed the following affected products by UPC and best-before code:

  • Micro Verdure Microgreens – Broccoli (80 g), UPC 6 28011 65702 2, best before 15MA26 and 22MA26
  • Micro Verdure Microgreens – Summery Fusion (150 g), UPC 6 28011 65748 0, best before 15MA26 and 22MA26
  • Micro Verdure Microgreens – Spicy Trio (80 g), UPC 6 28011 65710 7, best before 15MA26 and 22MA26

Symptoms of illness can include nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps, and watery to bloody diarrhea, the CFIA says. In severe cases, the agency says some people may have seizures or strokes, or may need blood transfusions or kidney dialysis. The CFIA says severe illness can also lead to permanent kidney damage or death.

The recall was triggered by the company, and no illnesses have been reported, according to the CFIA.

The CFIA says it is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of other products and is verifying that recalled products are being removed from the marketplace.

The recall identification number is RA-81863, according to the CFIA.
