Cochrane council designates June 21, 24 and 25 as voluntary holidays during “Blue Heart Shared Shores” week
Cochrane town council voted June 6 to designate June 21, June 24 and June 25 as local voluntary holidays as part of an annual event the town calls “Blue Heart Shared Shores Cultural Awareness Week.”
The designations are not statutory holidays and do not automatically mean time off. Instead, the town is asking local businesses, organizations and school boards to decide whether—and how—they will observe the days.
Council designated June 21 as Indigenous Cochrane Day, June 24 as Franco-Cochrane Day, and June 25 as Anglo-Cochrane Day.
According to the town’s release, June 21 aligns with National Indigenous Peoples Day and June 24 aligns with La Saint-Jean-Baptiste.
Mayor Peter Politis said council opted for a voluntary model because making the days statutory could affect municipal operations and local businesses and increase municipal overtime costs.
The town said essential municipal operations and emergency services will continue on those dates.
The release links the week’s theme to Lake Commando.
