Ontario Announces New Energy Efficiency Programs with $10.9 Billion Plan
The Ontario government has announced the introduction of new energy efficiency programs, including the Home Renovation Savings Program, which will commence on January 28, 2025. This initiative is part of a $10.9 billion investment over 12 years aimed at improving energy efficiency across the province.
The Home Renovation Savings Program will provide rebates of up to 30% for homeowners who undertake energy efficiency renovations. Eligible upgrades include the installation of new windows, doors, insulation, air sealing, smart thermostats, heat pumps, rooftop solar panels, and battery storage systems. The program is expected to expand later in 2025 to include rebates for energy-efficient appliances.
This initiative is supported by the Affordable Energy Act, which became effective on December 4, 2024, providing a legislative framework for the expansion of energy efficiency programs in Ontario.
Stephen Lecce, Ontario's Minister of Energy and Electrification, highlighted the financial benefits of the program, noting its potential to reduce energy costs for families and businesses. Additionally, Mike Holmes, a proponent of energy efficiency, emphasized the importance of these programs in promoting sustainable living.
These programs are part of Ontario's broader strategy to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact, with significant investments aimed at long-term sustainability.
