Ontario Northland Announces Timmins-Porcupine Station Project
Ontario Northland has announced the commencement of the Transit and Rail Project Assessment Process for the new Timmins-Porcupine Station. The project is part of the reinstated Northlander Passenger Rail service, which will run between Toronto (Union Station) and Northeastern Ontario, including a new station in Timmins.
The Timmins-Porcupine Station will be located along the existing rail corridor, just west of Bob’s Lake in Timmins. The station will feature a train platform, station building, outdoor parking, pedestrian walkway, bus bays, a taxi stand, a designated passenger pick-up and drop-off area, and a municipal bus stop. The study area includes reserved land for a potential future bus storage and maintenance facility, which will require further impact assessment and consultation.
The environmental impacts of the project are being assessed under the Transit and Rail Project Assessment Process (TRPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, made under the Environmental Assessment Act. An Environmental Project Report (EPR) is being prepared for the project.
A second Public Information Centre will be held on June 19, 2024, at Northern College in South Porcupine. The public, government agencies, Indigenous Communities and Organizations, and other interested parties are encouraged to attend to learn more and provide feedback. The meeting will present the findings of the draft technical and environmental studies conducted so far.
