Postal Workers Strike to Halt Canada Post Operations
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has announced a national strike commencing on November 15, 2024, at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time. As a result, Canada Post operations will be halted, affecting the processing and delivery of mail and parcels. This disruption is expected to cause delays for customers across the country.
In response to the strike, the Government of Canada has advised citizens to set up a My Service Canada Account (MSCA) and enroll in direct deposit to ensure the timely receipt of benefits. This measure is intended to mitigate the impact of potential mail delays on the delivery of physical cheques for socio-economic programs, including the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS), and the Canada Child Benefit.
Service Canada has confirmed that during the strike, Canada Post will continue to deliver cheques for these programs once a month. Additionally, November cheques will be released early to reduce potential delays. Clients of the Canadian Dental Care Plan can access their determination letters online, and those requiring passports can still pick them up at designated offices.
Residents are encouraged to use online services and portals for accessing government services and making payments during the postal disruption. For further updates, individuals can visit the Service Impacts website or contact local offices directly.
