Smooth Rock Falls passes bylaw approving Building Official Services agreement with Iroquois Falls

Smooth Rock Falls — At its regular meeting on May 6, 2026, Smooth Rock Falls council gave third and final reading to Bylaw 2026-36, approving an agreement with the Town of Iroquois Falls for Building Official Services.

The bylaw was among several items council addressed that night, including preparations for upcoming Public Works collective bargaining, approvals of workplace policy statements, decisions affecting local events and facilities, and a list of topics council plans to raise at the 2026 Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference.

According to council’s meeting highlights, the agreement with Iroquois Falls covers Building Official Services, including plans review and inspection services.

Council also received a report on the upcoming Public Works collective bargaining process. The highlights say negotiations will be led by the CAO-Treasurer, with support from the Municipal Clerk and Public Works Coordinator.

During the council and public question period, a question was raised about whether the union president is present during negotiations. Council’s recorded response said both the union’s national representative and the local union president are present and participate throughout the collective bargaining process.

Council approved the 2026 Health & Safety Policy Statement and the 2026 Violence and Harassment Policy Statement.

In other decisions, council approved Kelly Park as the proposed location for an Arctic Riders Snowmobile Club welcome sign.

Council directed administration to proceed with a public call for Municipal Accommodation Tax funding applications in May 2026.

Council also approved continuing the town’s annual Spring Clean-Up Event in conjunction with Françoise Landry Day. The highlights say residents will be permitted to place reusable items curbside prior to collection week. The highlights also say council expanded landfill accessibility during the clean-up period to help residents dispose of eligible materials.

Council approved consolidating the town’s 2026 Volunteer Recognition Event with the annual Senior Luncheon, to be held in June during Seniors Month.

For the 2026 AMO conference, council approved several delegation requests. The meeting highlights list the topics as funding for servicing unorganized areas, lifting the DSBONE moratorium, Connecting Link funding, and Highway 11 safety improvements. The list also includes support for northern economic development initiatives and year-round road access to James Bay communities.

Council also issued a formal letter of support for the Township of Opasatika’s proposed rest area project, according to the highlights.

The next council meeting is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
